It was 30 years ago in the year 1974 when Mr. D. Bowler of Tollygunge Club who was then in Calcutta in the British High Commissioner's Office, proposed a swimming competition between the children of the premier Clubs in Calcutta having swimming pools, i.e. Calcutta Club, Calcutta Swimming Club, Saturday Club, and, Tollygunge Club. It was felt that this friendly inter-club competition would provide an impetus for improving the standard of swimming amongst the children in these four clubs.
The first meeting of the representatives (members-in-charge of swimming) of the four clubs i.e. Capt. T. Mukherji & Mr. R. Mookerjee of Calcutta Club, Capt. M.S. Wadwani & Mr. Sashank Kochar of Calcutta Swimming Club, Mr. Keshav Dutta & Mr. R.S. Brijnath of Saturday Club, and Mr. R.H. Wright & Mr. D. Bowler of Tollygunge Club, was held at Calcutta Swimming Club in May 1974. The second meeting was held on 4th June 1974 when Tollygunge Club agreed to donate the Championship Trophy which was named 'Tollygunge Inter Club Challenge Trophy' and it was decided to hold two swimming meets each with a programme of 30 events for boys and girls in four age groups - the first at Calcutta Swimming Club on 30th June 1974 and the second at Tollygunge Club on 14th July 1974. The first TICCT Committee was also formed with the representatives of the four clubs as Members. Mr. D. Bowler was the first Chairman of this Committee and Mr. Sashank Kochar the first Honorary Secretary.
This friendly inter-club competition, which consists of, three competitive swimming meets, one gala and a waterpolo match is open to participation by children of Members of the four clubs representing their respective Club.
The meets and the gala are spread over the four Clubs – one meet at the Calcutta Swimming Club, one at Saturday Club and one at Tollygunge Club with the gala at Calcutta Club. The waterpolo match is held at the Calcutta Swimming Club. Members of all the four Clubs are invited to the venue Club on the days of the meets / gala / waterpolo match and there is usually very good attendance for cheering the teams.
The TICCT have achieved the desired objective by improving the standard of swimming in the four clubs which is shown by the fact that at least 15 new records are broken by the swimmers every year. Also quite a few of the children have gone on to participate in State and National level swimming competitions and have fared very well. Quite a few of the TICCT children have also made it to the swimming teams of American and other Universities.
